Training

Why is proper training and the dog grooming world becoming regulated so important?

Before Nikki went to undertake her City and Guilds training at Scotgroom, she had already received some training from someone who wasn’t qualified but had been doing it for years. As such, she therefore thought the training and exams with Scotgroom would be a walk in the park. However, Nikki quickly learnt that what she had been taught was both incorrect and unsafe and not in the best interests of the dogs in her care. Training with Agnes Murphy taught Nikki about the different breeds of dogs and correct breed standard styles to go with them. More importantly, Agnes taught Nikki how to build relationships of trust and understanding with the dogs on the grooming table and helped her develop more knowledge and experience in dog handling and management.

Agnes has bred, shown and judged various different breeds over the years and competed at the top level world-wide in dog grooming competitions. To be a competent groomer, you have to understand and respond appropriately to a wide variety of dogs and their behaviours/anxieties. Just like us humans, they are all different and one approach doesn’t always suit all. Nikki shares her knowledge and experience gained throughout her training and having happy settled dogs on our tables and in our care at Nikki's Canine Sassoon makes the whole process much easier for all involved.

Had Nikki not went for her City & Guilds qualification at Scotgroom, she certainly wouldn’t be the talented groomer that she is today. Before starting to train students Nikki also undertook her International Certified Master Groomer qualification through ICMG UK. This was to ensure that her skills and practice were both correct and to a standard that enabled her to successfully train students in the profession of dog grooming. Nikki feels that it is important that ALL GROOMERS receive the correct training to ensure the safety and well-being of the dog when it arrives at the grooming table.
